If you want to grow onions in your own garden or on the balcony, it is best to use onion sets. It is planted between March and April, and can then be harvested in August. In order for the cuttings to thrive well, the correct planting distance must be observed.

Onions need enough space to grow

Growing onions successfully

Cultivating onions is usually relatively easy and brings good results even to garden beginners. However, there are a few rules to follow when cultivating onions.
First, a sunny and airy spot should be chosen as the location. The soil is ideally loose, rich in nutrients, well drained and free of weeds.

What are onion sets?

Onion sets are small, basically ready-made onions that just need to grow. They can be planted in the ground in fall or spring. If you sow in March/April, the harvest will take place in early autumn, if you sow in autumn, the bulb will remain dormant over the winter and then bring a good harvest early in spring.

The planting distance for onion sets

Onion sets find their place in a freshly dug and raked bed. The soil should be loose so that the onions can root well.
In order to be able to plant the cuttings neatly in a row, a string is stretched over the bed for better orientation. You tie the string to two short sticks that are pressed into the ground at the left and right end of the planting row, pull it tight by turning the sticks and thus have a straight line for planting. Stick the onions with the roots into the ground along this mark so that the upper third of the onion is sticking out. One onion is planted every 10 cm. When the row is finished, you move the guide line (7.13€) by about 30 cm and start to insert the next row.
