The larch is a magnificent tree whose natural construction plan does not allow for cutting. Cultivation in the garden sometimes sets him narrow limits to which he must be able to adapt. When is a topiary really necessary?

Larch as a solitaire
Cultivating larch free-standing is the best way to give this magnificent tree the attention it deserves. If it is given enough space from the start, there is nothing to complain about in the tree shape. On the contrary, a naturally grown larch is an attractive sight.
Such a tree in a solitary position does not require a topiary. Branches that have died or been snapped off by the wind may be removed promptly, regardless of the season.
When planting, the later space requirement is often underestimated. If, after years, the larch comes close to other trees or buildings, the disturbing branches can be cut back in autumn.
Larch as hedge planting
Occasionally larches are also planted as a hedge. They need to be trimmed regularly to keep the hedge from getting out of shape and taking up more space than necessary. The larches should be pruned a year after planting because they branch out more. After that, the cut must be repeated annually.
- Autumn is the ideal time for topiary
- first remove all dead branches
- likewise all damaged branches
- trim the hedge to the desired height
- Cut back the sides of the hedge evenly and evenly
An electric hedge trimmer (€77.00) is ideal for trimming the hedge, as it achieves a more even shape than by hand.
The disadvantages of pruning measures
The European larch does not like pruning and resin heavily afterwards. The cuts are also open entry points, which favor the penetration of fungal pathogens. The Japanese larch is more tolerant of pruning.
- Keep pruning measures to a minimum
- use disinfected and sharp tools
- seal larger interfaces with tree wax (12.96€).
- cut on a dry day
tips
Cut shoots can be used to propagate cuttings.
Topiary on a bonsai larch
The bonsai larch is given a basic shape at the beginning, which can vary depending on your preference. Later, new shoots that disturb the shape are simply plucked out. This usually happens in early summer. Larger corrections to the shape of bonsai should only be made in autumn.
