A big garden needs a big tree. If edible fruit is not important, the larch is a good choice. This conifer is unusual because its needles turn golden yellow in autumn. How to properly plant.

Larches are best planted in late autumn

A location for eternity

The location of the larch must be chosen carefully when planting, because this tree reaches a considerable size and has a long life ahead of it. This is important:

  • a loamy, nutrient-rich soil
  • profoundly fresh and moisture-retaining
  • with a pH of 5.5 to 7
  • sunny place, not shaded by other plants

A small garden is unsuitable for the larch in the long run. Likewise, a close proximity to house walls and paved areas must be avoided.

The ideal planting time

If you want to enrich your home garden with a larch, then you should get a young tree from the tree nursery between October and November and plant it without delay. You should only pay attention to a frost-free day. A specimen about 50 cm high is optimal and can be had for less than 20 euros.

But what matters even more is his health. Take a close look at the larch so that diseases and pests are not already involved.

Preparation before the "moving in" of the larch

After you have found the ideal location for the larch, you should dig up the ground deeply. If necessary, you should enrich the soil with clay or compost. Then dig a large planting hole twice the size of the larch's root ball.

Place the roots of the larch and the pot in the water so that it can soak up the water. This makes rooting easier and faster later on.

The final step: planting out

  1. Carefully place the tree in the prepared planting hole.
  2. Hold the larch straight as you fill in the gaps with soil.
  3. Kick the earth hard.
  4. Water the larch extensively on the first day of planting and do not neglect this activity in the following weeks either. Until the root system has conquered the new soil, the tree is dependent on this water supply.

tips

In order for the tree to have a better hold, you should attach a support stake and tie it to it when you plant it.
