Is there a plum tree in your garden? Then you should definitely know when the right time has come to harvest the popular sweet fruits.

Mirabelles are harvested from August

Harvest time for plums

The general harvest time for plums is between August and September. During this period, you have a good chance of a rich yield of sweet, ripe fruit in Germany. However, when the perfect time has come depends on a variety of different factors:

  • variety
  • maintenance
  • weather
  • location

Harvest plums based on the variety

Depending on the variety, the flowering time of the Mirabelle plums varies, and with it the right time to harvest. The Miragrande variety, for example, blooms late, so you can only harvest these fruits well into September. In rare cases, however, some varieties are already ripe from June, depending on other site conditions.

Influence of care, weather and location

Pruning care is the most important factor for an early and productive harvest. The trees grow quickly and therefore require timely thinning. Otherwise the fruit will have problems ripening. Too cool weather and increased rain also delay the harvest. In addition, you can usually harvest all varieties one to two weeks earlier at locations in south-west Germany than in the north or east.
