A beautiful cottage garden and a bulky fence made of wire or even plastic? No, that doesn't harmonize. A fence made of willow, on the other hand, adapts wonderfully to the overall picture and is still an eye-catcher. Even more so if it's homemade. It's not as difficult as you might think. Find out how to do it.

Build a willow fence yourself
Obtaining the rods
All you need for a homemade electric fence are a few willow branches and some tools, which are in every garden shed. You can simply cut the willow rods from your own tree or a free-standing willow. It is best to get the twigs in winter, as cutting a willow tree in summer is prohibited.
Depending on whether you want your fence to continue to grow or to keep its shape, you have to decide on young or old shoots.
preparation
- Soak the willow rods in water.
- Find a spot in your garden.
- Loosen the soil where you want it.
- Drive a row of wooden stakes into the ground.
manual
- Begin above the ground, leading one rod alternately in front of and behind the stakes.
- Tighten the rods at the end.
- After a few layers, switch braiding direction.
- Cut off the overhanging branches.
Different braid patterns
Depending on when you switch the order in which you place the rods around the stakes, different patterns emerge. Feel free to try it out. A particularly beautiful sight are branches of different willow species. Most of the time they are different colors. You can also stick the rods vertically into the ground and then braid them together. The great thing about a self-made electric fence is that you can determine the height and length yourself.
