A pasture in your own garden? For many gardeners, deciduous trees with their impressive growth have a very special appeal. However, you have to consider a few aspects when planting. On this page you will find all relevant information.

Willows are best planted out in spring or fall

Expectations

Willows are relatively undemanding and extremely easy to care for. In the wild, they feel most comfortable near water. Do you own a garden pond? Then the choice of location will not be difficult for you. However, you should pay attention to a few things:

site selection

  • sunny location
  • detached
  • airy

substrate

  • wet ground
  • sandy, clayey or loamy soil
  • pH of 4.5-7.8 (acidic to neutral)
  • loose soil
  • nutritious

Plan enough space

The most important criterion is that your garden offers enough space. After a short time, willows reach a high growth, which also expands in width. In addition, an extensive root system forms that could possibly lift stones. Therefore, never plant your willow near buildings, terraces, neighboring properties or sidewalks. However, it is also possible to cultivate the willow as a hedge, bedding plant or in a bucket.

manual

time

Plant your willow either in the fall after the leaves have shed, or in the spring. If you grow the deciduous tree from cuttings yourself, spring is also recommended as the planting date.

preparation

  1. Loosen the soil so that later the roots do not encounter obstacles.
  2. To do this, dig up the soil about two meters deep.
  3. Enrich the soil with compost or peat.
  4. Dig a planting hole three times the size of the root ball.

Action

  1. Water your pasture.
  2. Then put the tree in the ground.
  3. Fill the remaining hole with soil and press it down lightly.
  4. If necessary, support the willow with a stake.
  5. Water the pasture again.
  6. Mulch the substrate.
