Which home remedies really help against moss?

Numerous means are recommended with which moss can be removed from the lawn or from paved surfaces. Garden furniture that has turned green can also be easily cleaned with the help of household products. However, not every agent is suitable for every application.

Home remedies for the lawn

You should not use any agents on the lawn that can act like weed killers. These would namely attack the desired plants as well as unwanted moss or clover. The most harmless measure is scarifying as part of lawn care in spring.

The application of sulphate of ammonia also shows a good effect. However, it should only be used when the soil is neutral or slightly alkaline as it makes the soil slightly more acidic. Vinegar, salt and soda should not be used on the lawn at all. They not only destroy the moss but also the lawn grasses.

Home remedies for paved surfaces

You can easily remove moss from paving slabs made of concrete or natural stone with clear water and a scrubbing brush. The moss can also be removed by scraping (e.g. with a spade or shovel). It should be slightly damp for this, which makes the work much easier. Particularly suitable times are just after a downpour or before the morning dew has dried.

Pour boiling water into the joints of your decking or paving stones before scraping them out. This makes it easier to remove moss, grass and other plants and they don't grow back as quickly. You can also use undiluted cola on smaller areas. Its phosphoric acid is very effective against moss and also prevents re-infestation.

A wooden terrace, like concrete slabs or walls, can be freed from moss with a high-pressure cleaner (€119.90). However, this measure can change the wood structure so that moss can grow again more quickly afterwards.

Clean garden furniture

Moss does not usually grow on garden furniture, but a greenish coating often forms, which is often incorrectly called verdigris. This can be removed with vinegar, soda or soft soap (44.90€). Then rinse your garden furniture with clear water.
