Sweet almonds are basically a tasty treat if it weren't for the bitter, brown skin that spoils the flavor. With a few tricks, however, you can easily remove the skin from the tonsils.

Skinning almonds dry is almost impossible

Worth knowing about the almond

Anyone who assumes that the almond is a nut is far from it. The delicious seeds belong to the stone fruit family. They are surrounded by a protective, fairly hard shell that must first be cracked before the coveted core can be obtained. This is surrounded by a brown, slightly bitter skin. If you don't like the taste of the dull skin, you have to peel the almond. When dry, this is a difficult task. It will be easier if the almond is peeled.

Skin the almonds properly

Skinned almonds taste better and are also needed for fine cakes, tarts or creamy fillings made from cream or quark.

  1. Crack the almonds first, placing the nutcracker across the seam in the shell.
  2. Place the almonds in a large enough saucepan.
  3. Add enough water to cover the almonds.
  4. Boil the almonds for about five minutes.
  5. Pour the almonds into a colander.
  6. Rinse the almonds under cold water. The skin is now peeling off.
  7. Now take each almond between your thumb and forefinger, press lightly on the thick end and the pit should slide out to the front.

Skin the almonds using the microwave

  1. Place the almonds in a microwave-safe bowl filled with water.
  2. Heat the whole thing up in the microwave for a few minutes on the highest setting.
  3. Drain the water and place the hot almonds in a large tea towel.
  4. Place the corners on top of each other and rub the almonds vigorously. The shell comes off.
  5. Take out the shelled almonds and repeat the process until all the almonds are skinless.

Process peeled almonds

When the kernels are peeled, you can roast them in a pan without fat. Turn the kernels over so they don't burn. Peeled and roasted almonds are a delicious snack, but can also be roughly chopped or finely grated. Put the almonds in your morning muesli, in a quark cream or whip up a fluffy almond cream. Fish lovers turn their trout in roasted flaked almonds.
You can use the shelled almonds in any recipe that involves almonds.
