Instead of blooming and growing luxuriantly, the camellia is dropping more and more leaves - a (hobby) gardener is quick to think about that. Who knows what is normal in this area and where there is cause for concern.

Is moderate leaf drop normal?
Every camellia will lose leaves over the course of its life, this is quite normal. A camellia leaf lives only about three years while the plant itself can become ancient. As long as falling and budding leaves are roughly balanced, you shouldn't worry. The situation is different, of course, if your camellia is losing leaves excessively and is slowly becoming bare.
Why does the camellia lose so many leaves?
Excessive leaf loss can have different causes, but care mistakes are mostly responsible for it. Watering too much or too little is just as detrimental as using the wrong fertilizer or too much of it. Frost can also damage the camellia.
Also check whether you have really given your camellia a suitable location. It needs a lot of light, little heat and high humidity. A camellia does not feel comfortable in a well-heated room. This is sometimes shown by yellow leaves or excessive leaf loss. The causes may also have been in the past for a long time, the camellia is quite unforgiving in this regard.
Step by step against leaf loss:
- Check location: enough light, fresh air and sufficiently high humidity?
- Check the soil: waterlogged or very dry soil?
- check for pests: lice, vine weevil?
- Check roots: rotted or frozen? larval infestation?
- combat the cause
What can I do for my camellia?
Eliminate the causes of leaf shedding as soon as possible. Then give your ailing camellia a rest. If the soil is wet, do not water until the top layer of soil has dried slightly.
tips
The sooner you tackle the cause of your camellia's leaf loss (e.g. by collecting larvae on the affected roots), the sooner you can save your camellia.
