The storage of carrots has its pitfalls. Either the orange roots quickly become soggy, or the mold spreads. This is usually due to incorrect storage. Read here how you can keep the vegetables fresh for months.

Only fresh goods can stay fresh
The cornerstone for optimal storage is already laid with the purchase. Only buy carrots that meet all freshness criteria:
- they are firm and crunchy
- Carrot heads must not already be green
- the green of bunched carrots is still juicy and has a rich colour
Remove plastic from carrots
Carrots are often packaged in supermarkets. This plastic packaging is quite practical for transport, but it is unsuitable for longer storage. Moisture cannot escape from it and it is only a matter of time before the carrots go moldy.
Do not wash before storage
If carrots are washed before storage, they run the risk of becoming blotchy and spoiling. The roots should always be washed and peeled immediately before consumption.
Store carrots in the refrigerator
Carrots that are not used immediately can be stored in the refrigerator.
- Take the carrots out of the packaging.
- Remove the greens from bunched carrots.
- Wrap the beets in a damp kitchen towel.
- Place the carrots in the vegetable drawer of the refrigerator.
tips
Do not store carrots with apples, pears or ripe tomatoes. The carrots quickly develop a bitter taste in this neighborhood.
Store carrots in the basement for months
Large quantities of carrots hardly find enough space in the refrigerator. A cool basement is the solution. All you need is a large container and enough sand.
- the bottom of the container is covered with sand
- carrots are layered on top
- each carrot layer is also covered with sand
- the best storage place is cool and frost-free
The carrots stored in sand keep fresh until spring and can be removed as needed.
Freeze in the freezer
The carrots are first washed and peeled. They are then cut into small pieces, which are blanched for about two to four minutes before freezing.
The cooled and dried vegetables are ideally frozen in shallow containers and should be used within a year.
