A ridge is not a permanent area. Experience has shown that anyone who enjoys spending time in their green oasis loves to change their image over and over again. Transplanting a hedge is sometimes necessary for a radical change. Here you can find out how.

The larger the plants, the more difficult it is to transplant

The right time

Ideally, choose an autumn month before the first frost for the intervention. Then the growth of the plants is slowed down, so that the new requirements do not affect the development too much. In addition, the shrubs have time to form new roots in winter.

Necessary work steps

Relocating a hedge involves the following steps:

  • prepare the new location
  • pruning
  • Dig out
  • shorten roots
  • transport plants
  • planting

Prepare the new location

Dig the trench for the hedge beforehand. Enriching with compost should also be done in advance. If you choose spring for transplanting your hedge, it is advisable to apply fertilizer right away.

The cutback

A thorough topiary before digging is therefore important because a large part of the roots remain in the ground when transplanted. So that the plants are not undersupplied, their size should be adjusted.

The excavation

Now separate the roots with a spade so that you can take the ball out of the ground.

shorten roots

Round off the ball by cutting back the roots into a compact structure. Be careful to get as many small fibrous roots as possible.

The transport

Inside the garden, it is best transported in a wheelbarrow. For longer distances, it is advisable to protect the root with a linen bag.

The planting

If necessary, remove the flaxseed protection and place your bushes at a species-appropriate distance and depth in the trench that has already been prepared.

Care after transfer

The following work steps are required for continued healthy growth:

  • Stabilization with ropes or posts
  • Sufficient watering
  • Frost protection by brushwood or fleece
