Anyone who has already found out something about bougainvilleas knows that they are not hardy. After all, they also come from southern climes. You can find out below when the climbing beauties have to be brought into the house at the latest.

Before the first night frosts, the bougainvillea should be brought into a warm place

Please no frost

In accordance with their subtropical, South American homeland, bougainvilleas are incredibly light and warmth-loving. They are not used to temperatures below 0°C. That's why their structure is not protected against frost. If they are exposed to more severe low temperatures, they will also protest accordingly by quickly shedding their leaves. They usually survive one or two nights at just below 0°C, but longer periods of frost can mean their death.

So the basic rules are:

  • Bougainvilleas are not frost hardy
  • protect from temperatures below 0°C
  • possible death if exposed to frost for a longer period of time

Follow the weather forecast to start wintering

So the timing of when to winter your bougainvillea is a bit delicate. It is best to pay close attention to the weather reports in autumn to avoid unnecessary frost damage. In the winter quarters, however, the bougainvillea can also be quite cool (5-15°C).
