As beautiful as a terrace wall covered with colorful bougainvillea would be - in our country the Andean plant can hardly be cultivated outdoors. However, the gardener who loves flowers does not have to do without them - this article shows you how successful pot cultivation works.

The bougainvillea in the pot is mobile and can be moved depending on the climate

Why Bougainvillea doesn't like our climate

Bougainvillea is native to a relatively small region of the Andes in South America, which has a subtropical climate. So she is used to getting lots of sun and warmth. In addition, their intermittent vegetation phases depend heavily on the water supply, which takes place in their home area in a very clearly structured manner.

It is therefore less able to cope with our seasonal rhythm, rather fluctuating precipitation and a lack of sunshine. In the Mediterranean area, the bougainvillea can certainly thrive on sunny house walls - pot cultivation is ideal here.

Growing bougainvillea in a pot - the advantages

The advantage of cultivating bougainvilleas in pots: they are mobile in the bucket and can be repositioned if necessary. So if the site conditions are not agreeable, they can be changed quickly - this pays off especially for bougainvillea beginners who first have to test the ideal location for their new gardening addition.

But mobility is of course also essential for successful overwintering. So you can enjoy the blooming beauty on the terrace in summer and in your room in winter.

What a lush abundance of flowers in the pot must be

Even if one might see oneself at a disadvantage with regard to the red or violet glowing bougainvillea splendor of Mediterranean gardening colleagues - there are also some tricky advantages to be gained from pot cultivation. You can give your bougainvillea conditions that promote flowering in a very controlled manner in the bucket.

The first thing to do is choose the pot size: a narrow root ball produces a more lush flower in relation to the leaf mass - so put your specimen in a rather small pot.

The substrate should be permeable to protect against waterlogging and contain valuable nutrients such as minerals.

Water well and regularly in the sun

A location that is as sunny as possible goes without saying. It should also be light in the frost-free wintering location. Regular watering while meticulously avoiding waterlogging is also a must.

The pot cultivation of Bougainvillea at a glance:

  • Advantageous for year-round flowering outdoors and indoors
  • simple location test through mobility
  • controlled promotion of flowering through nutrient-rich, permeable substrate and small pot
