In most cases, a celery bulb is too big to use all at once. Now there are various ways to make a cut copy durable. If you want to eat the remaining celeriac within a week, wrap it in a damp cloth and keep it in this form in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator. If the tuber is to remain as fresh as possible for months, freezing is the best solution. In our guide we tell you in detail how to proceed.

Celery freezes well with other vegetables

Freezing celeriac - the procedure step by step

Freezing celeriac is one of the easier exercises in the kitchen. Once the vegetables have been peeled, the rest is easy to do. Follow our step-by-step guide:

  1. Cut off the root remains at the lower end of the tuber generously. Ideally, you should use a sharp, handy kitchen knife for this.
  2. Also remove the blade base with the same instrument.
  3. Peel the celeriac. You should not work excessively sparingly - on the contrary. Remove about half a centimeter from the tuber. Again, it is advisable to use a sharp knife - with a vegetable peeler you will only progress slowly and/or will not achieve the desired result.
  4. Divide the celeriac into smaller pieces - dicing has proven itself.
  5. Put the pieces of celeriac in portions in freezer bags or other containers such as freezer boxes. Be careful not to put too many pieces in a bag (or jar). The individual pieces should have some space. In the case of freezer bags, it is important to remove the excess air after filling them with the celery pieces. In order to do this very quickly, easily and reliably, you need a vacuum sealer. Alternatively, you can suck the air out with your mouth. However, this is more tiring. In order to pack the celery pieces without plastic, you can use suitable jars or storage containers made of glass or stainless steel. It is important that the aids can be closed tightly.
  6. Seal the containers used airtight.
  7. Transfer the bags or cans of celery chunks to the freezer.

Note: In its raw form, celeriac can be kept in the freezer for up to six months.

Cooked celeriac can also be frozen

If there is any leftover celeriac that has already been cooked, you can also freeze it. That's how it's done:

  1. Allow the cooked celery pieces to cool.
  2. Seal the pieces in airtight containers in portions (see step 5 in the instructions above).
  3. Place the containers of celery chunks in the freezer.

Note: In the cooked form, the celeriac keeps for three months in the freezer.

tips

After defrosting, all you have to do is heat the celery pieces.

final word

Freezing means you have celeriac ready to hand for a long time, for example as an ingredient in soups. Speaking of which: Combine the celery pieces with sliced carrots, chopped leeks and parsley and freeze the ingredients together. In this way, you always have a variety of soup greens available.
