- Attach plastic privacy mats
- Securely stabilize privacy screens made of fence elements
- Sun sails are particularly at risk
With a decorative privacy screen, a relaxing idyll for undisturbed leisure hours can be created even in a small garden. During the installation, however, one should not only think of sunshine and blue spring skies, but also of the unleashed forces of autumn gusts of wind.

Attach plastic privacy mats
Colored plastic mats, which are used in many places on balconies and terraces as privacy screens, are very easy and quick to install. In order to provide a bomb-proof hold as discreetly as possible, there are colour-coordinated fastening loops that are reminiscent of cable ties in terms of their functionality. These can easily be looped through gaps in the metal railing of a balcony or around other structural elements. Make sure that it is fastened as tightly as possible, otherwise the flapping of a privacy screen in the wind can become an annoying background noise over time.
Securely stabilize privacy screens made of fence elements
Due to their large attack surface and the relatively low weight, privacy screens made of wood are usually particularly endangered in storms. Sufficiently thick square timber should be used to securely fasten these fence elements, and metal drive-in sleeves should be hammered deep into the ground to hold them in place. If these wooden walls are connected directly to a house wall, special metal brackets can be used as fittings to ensure a firm hold. You can achieve a particularly high level of stability with wooden fence elements if they are secured at the side with slanted storm anchor posts. Significant factors for the stability of a wooden privacy screen are:
- the quality or the degree of weathering of the wooden elements
- the thickness of the screws used
- the impact depth of the anchor sleeves
- positioning in protected areas or particularly exposed windbreaks
Sun sails are particularly at risk
In the terraced house garden, an awning is often used as a privacy screen against prying eyes from the neighboring balcony. This is often installed in no time at all in summer and then often carelessly forgotten in autumn. It doesn't even need particularly strong gusts of wind to send sun sails tied to tree branches on a long journey. Better to be on the safe side and screw your sun sail used as a privacy screen with metal fittings to a house wall or a wooden post. Fastening sets equipped with carabiners and hooks also make it easier to remove the sun sail at the end of the gardening season and store it safely.
tips
When it comes to securely fastening privacy screens, it is by no means just about the material value that needs to be secured. If there is damage to property or personal injury as a result of a privacy screen being swept away by the wind, you can sometimes be held liable for proven breaches of duty.
