- Frozen fish? D rather not!
- Now landing nets and mud suckers are in demand
- Cut pond plants boldly for the winter
To make the garden pond winter-proof, start with a thorough general cleaning of the pool edge and the bank zones after the fish stock has been evacuated from the water. We explain what needs to be done, but please also think about securing the pond for the children during the winter.

Although we have been used to mild temperatures around the turn of the year for the last few years, we should not forget to make the garden pond winter-proof and also to protect the technology in and around the pool from possible frost damage. So the first step is to get the pond pumps, electrical filter system, water features, spotlights and underwater lamps out of the pool and into the water for the coming winter months.
Frozen fish? D rather not!
From a minimum pond depth of 80 cm, fish can remain in the water as long as the pond surface does not freeze completely and the temperatures on the bottom are between 4 and 7 °C. However, this is not enough for the exotic koi, so that they have to be brought into the house for the winter below the 15° mark.
Now landing nets and mud suckers are in demand
If the leaves are falling in autumn, an ornamental pond should be roughly cleaned with a net several times a week anyway. This reduces the rotting process of the floating leaves and the formation of hydrogen sulphide and methane, which has a positive effect on the oxygen supply of pond plants, fish and other microorganisms. It is best to clean the pool floor manually with a bucket if there is no pond sludge vacuum available.
Cut pond plants boldly for the winter
Thinning out and removing dying or yellowed plant parts is quite easy with the special pond scissors available on the market. Hyacinths, water lilies and all other aquatic plants that are not frost-resistant should be on land as early as October. This prevents the parts of the plant that are just dying from sinking to the bottom of the pond. While the pond plants originating from the European area are essentially frost-resistant, come
- parrot leaf;
- pubic plant;
- Nesaea;
- spear blade;
- threadweed;
- ruffled split-tooth moss;
- tiger lotus
Winterizing the garden pond is better in the basement or in the greenhouse. The plants in the bank area in particular can be cut back to 15 cm above the water level for the winter.
tips
With a close-meshed leaf protection net, which can be fixed over the pond from the end of September, you will save yourself a lot of work and at the same time improve the biological balance in the tank. A mesh size of approx. 20 mm is ideal.
