Whether it's the neighbour's hedge, the ancient apple tree with its broad crown or simply the house: there are many shady areas in the garden. Many of them are still in the sun for about four to six hours a day, which is why these locations are also referred to as penumbra. Many colorful perennials feel at home here, which is why a flower bed does not always have to be in the blazing sun.

Pay attention to the ground
However, before you put together the right plants, you should first take a closer look at the soil conditions at the desired location. Shaded areas tend to be wetter and have a lower pH, so moisture tolerant plants should be preferred. However, there are also partially shaded to shaded areas with rather dry soil where you should make a different choice of plants.
Suitable perennials for partial shade
These perennials and shrubs are suitable for damp and partially shaded to shady locations:
- Funkie
- mahonia
- masterwort
- crying heart
- snowball
- rhododendron
- witch hazel
- Christmas rose
If the semi-shady location is dry at the same time, you should rather plant plants like these:
- Japan anemone
- Aukube
- Bergenia
- spurge
- Ysander
- lungwort
- skimmie
- periwinkle
tips
Always try to choose the right plants for the respective environment and not vice versa adapt the environment to the plant. This is certainly possible within certain limits (e.g. by erecting a windbreak or soil improvement), but you will have more success and joy if you choose carefully.
