The foundations for a lushly blooming flower bed are laid at the time of planting. In the following compilation you will find the most important tips for an optimally planted bed.

Planting is always done after the ice saints

Note planting time

First of all, this includes the right planting time: you can plant perennials at any time between spring and autumn, you can plant annual and biennial summer flowers on the windowsill and put them in the bed in late spring - if possible only after the ice saints. Flower bulbs, on the other hand, can only be planted at certain times of the year:

  • Autumn: Tulips, daffodils, ornamental onions, crown imperial
  • Spring: lilies, dahlias, begonias, gladioli, calla

Preparation of the flower bed

In principle, you can create the flower bed both in spring and in autumn, whereby you can also add bulbs and summer flowers later. First, plan the bed with perennial shrubs and any flowering shrubs. Proper preparation of the bed is important, in which the soil is thoroughly freed from plant residues, loosened - if necessary also dug up - and improved with plenty of compost. Moist and compacted soils also benefit from drainage.

Water flowers before planting

Before you put the flowers in the now prepared bed, you should first put them in a container with water and let them soak thoroughly with moisture. This measure will later support perennials and shrubs in particular in the formation of new roots and thus help them to grow.

Pay attention to the planting depth and spacing

Then arrange the plants on the bed in the way you imagine the ideal grouping. Pay attention to the correct planting distance and don't worry about gaps that may be too large - the perennials will certainly grow much larger than they are at the moment. Once you are happy with the arrangement, you can dig the planting holes and plant the plants. They should not be planted deeper than they were in the container before.

Plant flower bulbs correctly

When planting flower bulbs, it is important to distinguish between the top and bottom correctly, otherwise the shoot cannot push itself towards the surface. In most types of onions, the underside is significantly wider than the upper side, which tends to taper to a point, and often has a slight root base. Some flower bulbs also need to be soaked in a container of lukewarm water overnight before planting.

tips

Don't forget to water the freshly planted flowers and perennials vigorously.
