There are numerous ways to make small or larger amounts of water bubble, flow or trickle in a refreshing and decorative way. Fountains have been very popular for centuries and, in a wide variety of designs, find their place not only in spacious but also in small gardens.

Even small fountains have a big impact

Simple fountains

It doesn't always have to be the typical replicas of traditional fountains, because other elements also caused the water to move.

pebble fountain

For example, a cluster of round pebbles is a popular base for water to flow slowly over. A pebble fountain is easy and fun, and you don't need a pond for this solution. All you need is a sufficiently large tank for a submersible pump. This tank must be able to hold enough water to replenish the amount of water that evaporates from the pebble surface on a sunny day. The container size depends on how often the system is refilled - a simple plastic bucket is often sufficient.

millstone fountain

A large millstone has great architectural impact and should therefore be carefully placed where it is opposed by another prominent feature. The water runs over the side of the stone and is caught in a tank below, again eliminating the need for a basin. A geyser nozzle can introduce air into the element if you want the bubbling effect typical of a fountain.

Integrate fountains into the garden

Narrow jets of water spouting from an informally designed pool can sometimes be very effective, but fountains tend to lend themselves to a more even arrangement. Stone fountains fit into symmetrical balances such as paved walkways, trimmed hedges and straight edges. In small, enclosed medieval gardens, paved paths often led to a central fountain. On the other hand, you don't need a lot of space to integrate a fountain in the garden: in narrow areas there is almost always a vertical surface for a separate wall-mounted fountain.

tips

Not only the shape of the fountain, but also its nozzle has an influence on the garden design, since there are different types of nozzles with different jet effects. For example, a fountain with a bell-shaped spray can look very pretty as the focal point of a tranquil, enclosed garden. However, in an unprotected, windy location, the falling water would lose its regular bell shape.
