Privet is one of the undemanding and robust shrubs that get along well with almost all locations. This also applies to fertilizing. Which fertilizer is suitable and when is the best time to fertilize the privet hedge?

Older privet hedges usually get by without fertilizer

Do you need to fertilize a privet hedge?

Privet grows very well without fertilizer in well drained, slightly humus rich soil. Light fertilization can only make sense for younger hedges, where the roots are not yet so pronounced.

Of course, the growth of the shrubs can be stimulated by additional fertilizing. However, you should not overdo it, because the privet hedge does not tolerate over-fertilization.

The right fertilizer for privet hedges

  • mature compost
  • horn shavings
  • mulch cover
  • conifer fertilizer
  • blue grain or green grain

Even if privet is not a conifer, the shrub is well cared for by conifer fertilizer. It is usually administered as a long-term fertilizer once a year.

When is the privet hedge fertilized?

Give slow-release fertilizer in the spring just before the privet sprouts.

With short-term fertilizers such as blue corn or green corn, you have to fertilize twice, exactly as planned. Fertilization is only successful if the nutrients reach the roots in good time. Therefore, give short-term fertilizer about 14 days before new growth, i.e. at the end of April and beginning of August.

Compost and horn shavings (€32.93) are spread out in the spring and gently worked into the soil with a rake.

Mulch protects and fertilizes at the same time

You can do without fertilizing completely if you spread a mulch layer of lawn clippings, leaves, cuttings, straw and other garden waste under the privet hedge.

The mulch material decomposes and the nutrients are continuously released into the soil by rain or watering.

At the same time, the mulch layer protects the soil from drying out and keeps the weeds under the hedge away.

Prepare the soil before planting the privet hedge

If the soil is depleted, you should improve the nutrient supply of the substrate when planting. Mix the potting soil with mature compost and horn shavings. Then the bushes are sufficiently cared for for the first few years.

tips

If privet does not grow, it is usually not due to the food supply. Often the roots of the shrub were not sufficiently watered before planting. The privet is also not good for shaded areas.
