Privet is a very robust plant that also grows well in nutrient-poor soil. So you can do without too frequent fertilizing - regardless of whether you grow the privet as a shrub in the garden or in a container or planted it as a hedge. What do you have to consider when fertilizing?

With the right fertilizer, the privet will bloom more luxuriantly

What to fertilize privet with?

  • mature compost
  • horn shavings
  • conifer fertilizer
  • long-term fertilizer
  • Short-term fertilizer (blue grain)

If you have a compost pile, mature compost is definitely the best fertilizer. Otherwise, feed your privet with organic fertilizers from the garden store.

You only need to spread compost and horn shavings (€32.93) under the bush or hedge once a year. Gently rake it into the ground.

Slow-release fertilizer is also given once a year. Even if privet is not a conifer, with conifer fertilizer it gets exactly the nutrients it needs for healthy growth.

The best time to fertilize privet

Bring on compost and horn shavings in spring. April is the ideal time. This also applies to long-term fertilizers.

Fertilizing with short-term fertilizer is done twice a year.

Some gardeners swear by additionally fertilizing the privet shortly before or after so that the shrub grows back faster and becomes dense.

Tips for fertilizing with short-term fertilizer

When using short-term fertilizers such as green corn or blue corn, you need to follow a relatively strict schedule. Fertilization should always be done about two weeks before new growth so that the nutrients can penetrate the soil in good time.

Blue corn or green corn are therefore given at the end of March and the beginning of August if the fertilization is to serve its purpose.

Fertilize privet in the bucket

The Chinese privet, which is not hardy, is mainly used for the care in the bucket. When caring for them in the pot, add some liquid fertilizer to the irrigation water every two to three weeks. It is even better if you repot the shrub in spring and put it in new garden soil.

If the pot is still big enough and therefore no repotting is necessary, simply replace the top layer of soil with fresh substrate.

Properly prepare soil for planting

You can almost completely do without fertilizing outdoors if you ensure that the soil receives sufficient nutrients when you plant.

Improve the potting soil with mature compost and horn shavings. Make sure that the substrate is permeable to water, because privet does not like waterlogging.

If the privet loses leaves, this is usually not a sign of a nutrient deficiency. The shrub then received too little water. This happens more often in very dry periods.

tips

Privet is a shallow root. This means that it doesn't spread its roots very deep into the soil. That's why privet needs to be watered regularly, especially when it's still very young.
