Bed borders form a visually appealing demarcation between green areas and flower beds. At the same time, they make maintenance noticeably easier, since the grass no longer grows uncontrollably into the bed. Laying a bed edging yourself is not difficult with our instructions and is easy to do even for the inexperienced.

Lay lawn edging stones
Whether square granite stones or brick: A bed edging made of stone blends wonderfully into the overall picture of the garden and is weatherproof. To do this, proceed as follows:
- Tension a string board to mark the course of the lawn edge.
- Dig a small ditch. This should be so deep that the stone later protrudes about 5 centimeters from the ground and a drainage layer about 5 centimeters thick fits into the pit.
- Add chippings or sand and compact.
- Insert stones and tap with a rubber mallet.
- Check the course with the spirit level.
- Fill the excavated material into the gaps in front of and behind the edge and also compact.
The stones should now be firmly in place and no longer wobble. If the soil is very sandy, it is advisable to place them in a bed of mortar.
Limit curved beds
These beds loosen up the garden optically and are therefore extremely popular. You can also easily provide these with a bed edging yourself. Stones with rounded heads that blend well with the round shape of the bed are particularly suitable here. Alternatively, you can divide larger stones to follow the course of the bed.
Since a batter board is not suitable for marking in this case, sprinkle sand or chalk on the ground along the desired shape and dig the trench. Proceed as described for the straight bed edging.
Lay lawn edging stones in ascending order
On sloping plots, the terraced arrangement of the bed edging is recommended. For this purpose, use stones of different heights, which are placed one after the other to form small steps. In this way, you can counteract soil erosion with simple means.
In order for the bed border to have sufficient stability, the stones need a stable foundation. They should therefore be concreted in any case. It also looks very nice if you make this bed edging out of concrete yourself.
tips
Use a special paving hammer for laying. Despite its own weight, this does not damage the stones and ensures that the stones are firmly seated in the subsoil.
