With its blaze of color and delicate fragrance, the Auricula (bot. Primula auricula) is an asset to any garden or balcony box. This primrose plant, which blooms in numerous colors, is also very demanding, easy to care for and easy to propagate.

The Primula auricula can be propagated by division, among other things

The propagation of the auricula is possible in various ways, namely by daughter plants or division and by sowing. Removing and planting the daughter plants is done in a few minutes, but you need a little patience for sowing.

Propagation by daughter plants

The auricle independently forms secondary rosettes, these are pure daughter plants. They arise either on the roots or in the leaf axils. By separating these daughter plants, you get identical auricles with the mother plant, i.e. plants that grow in the same shape and flower in the same color.

The division of the Primula auricula

The best time to divide your auricles is early spring (February to March) or after flowering (September to October). Take your time and dig up the plants to be divided. Rinse the roots with water, then see where is the best place to cut the roots.

The subplants are planted in the same way as the daughter plants. Choose a sunny spot that is in the shade at midday, with loose, well drained soil. A rock garden is also suitable. If necessary, put a tiny portion of compost in the planting hole, because the auricula prefers rather lean soil. Even if they otherwise tolerate drought, water the plants well.

Sowing the Auricles

You can also multiply their auricles with the help of seeds. However, you will not get single-variety A plants in this way. If you don't mind that or if you like surprises, then simply try sowing. Scatter the seeds on moist potting soil without covering them. At 18 °C to 20 °C they germinate after about 20 days.

The essentials in brief:

  • Self-reproduction by daughter plants
  • division easily possible
  • varietal propagation: only by division and daughter plants
  • Sowing not varietal

tips

If you love surprise bags and have enough space and patience, then you should definitely sow auricles. Maybe this will create your new favorite variety.
