Bush beans do not grow particularly high and therefore do not need climbing aids. Pole beans, on the other hand, hardly grow without climbing aids. Here are some nice, simple ideas for growing your runner beans.

Only climbing beans need a trellis

Why bush beans don't need a climbing aid

Bush beans grow to a maximum height of half a meter and - as their name suggests - grow bushy. They also don't form any loops to pull themselves up. Therefore, a climbing aid for bush beans is absolutely superfluous. If you want to green a wall or fence, you should plant pole beans or runner beans instead.

Climbing aid for climbing beans

Runner beans and runner beans are climbing beans and need climbing aids. There are very different options that cost little or no money:

  • Stick one stick per bean vertically into the ground next to the plant.
  • Build a tent of climbing beans by ramming sticks into the ground 12 inches apart in a circle and tying them together in the middle. One climbing bean is planted per stick.
  • If you have a chain link fence (€34.49) you can let your climbing beans climb it.
  • If you want to green a wall, you can do this with the help of threads that are fastened and stretched at the top and bottom with a screw or something similar.
  • Climbing beans also climb horizontally! If you plant your climbing beans in a raised bed or choose a very high-growing variety, you can create a green roof with pole or fire beans by pulling vertical strips that the climbing beans can climb along.
  • If you like it very creative, you can also use strings to specify shapes and pull the beans along them. However, the beans have to be helped here from time to time so that they don't get lost.

tips

Both poles and fire beans can do without a trellis if they have enough hanging space. When growing on the balcony, for example, an enchanting curtain of flowers can be created from hanging beans.
