Flower beds look attractive when they are clearly surrounded by a border. However, these bed borders should not only make a neat impression, but in many cases have a practical use. This is the case, for example, with flower beds in the middle of a lawn. Here the grass must be prevented from overgrowing the flower bed. Stone bed edgings are attractive in both natural and modern gardens, and they also score highly for their durability.

Stone edging ideas
You can use a wide variety of stones for stone bed edgings: natural stones (e.g. basalt, sandstone, granite), concrete stones, paving stones or clinker result in uncomplicated solutions. The borders can be slightly raised or planned at ground level - for example as a paved path surrounded by curbs. Reddish clinker and other paving stones are equally suitable for both purposes: you can lay them out as a narrow band around them or embed them upright in the ground. Higher stone palisades, which can be used to compensate for differences in height, are particularly interesting for sloping beds. Bed edging can also be designed as a low wall, either made of concrete blocks or bricks, or as a dry wall made of natural stone.
How to build a low dry stone wall
Whichever solution you choose, a bed border made of stone usually requires a foundation. With low walls, however, it is sufficient to dig a shallow trench, fill it with sand, gravel and crushed stone and then shake it firmly. Only higher walls and slope reinforcements require a concrete foundation. A border made of natural stones of different sizes, for example field stones you have collected yourself, looks very attractive as a bed border. You layer these on the solidified sand foundation in such a way that the differently shaped stones fit into each other and do not wobble. Gravel and potting soil fill in small gaps and provide more stability. The advantage of such a wall is that you can also plant it, for example with small perennial plants such as stonecrop, etc. The wall does not have to be particularly high, a few centimeters are enough. If it is too high, it may rob the plants in the bed of valuable light.
tips
Flower borders can be fenced in not only with stone, but also with other materials such as metal rails, woven willow fences or living plants.
