A flower bed can have many shapes: if it is to be in the middle of a lawn, for example, round is a good choice in many cases. Depending on the size and shape of the lawn, however, the island bed can also be irregularly shaped instead of circular - that's entirely up to your taste. First of all: A round bed belongs somewhere in the middle of a larger area like a lawn and should not be chosen as a border planting. For the edge - for example on a wall or a fence - you should better choose other shapes such as a semi - or quarter circle. The latter - the so-called piece of cake - cuts an elegant figure, especially in corners. Circular beds, on the other hand, do not really come into their own at the edges, they must have sufficient space around them and be visible from all sides.

The choice of plants should primarily be based on the location, so that you select the perennials to suit the light and soil conditions. Depending on the size of the bed, you can also plan the plants so that the island looks attractive at any time of the year. With regard to the grouping of perennials and shrubs, large, perennial perennials, ornamental shrubs and small trees should be planted in the middle, while the height of the plants decreases the closer they get to the edge of the bed. Place ornamental grasses, ground cover, evergreen plants, bulb flowers and annual or biennial summer flowers between perennial flowering plants. This variety loosens up the overall picture, but the number of different species should not be exaggerated: in small beds, three to five different species are sufficient, in large beds it can be eight to ten.
Create a round flower bed - Here's how
If you create the round flower bed in the middle of a lawn, you must first remove the turf from the intended location.
- Mark the intended bed.
- Cut the lawn with a spade.
- Dig the area well and remove roots and stones.
- A weed fleece (€21.70) prevents the emergence of grass and weeds.
- If necessary, fill in the resulting gap with topsoil.
- Dig a shallow trench around the bed.
- Fill this with sand and attach a bed edging.
- These lawn curbs are indispensable, otherwise the lawn will soon grow in the flower bed.
- Plant the perennials and shrubs.
- Instead of a weed fleece, you can also mulch the bed.
