Clear geometric shapes such as squares, rectangles, circles or triangles dominate in modern flower beds. The individual perennials and shrubs do not grow unruly and overgrow each other, instead their boundaries are clearly visible. The spaces in between are often filled with gravel or stones and look very tidy - quite apart from the fact that annoying weeds are suppressed in this way and the maintenance effort is kept to a minimum. The flower bed is clearly delimited, for example with a bed edging made of concrete or natural stones. Raised beds and other plant basins, which you can build yourself with little effort, are also very popular with this type of garden.

Choose only a few perennials in accentuated colors that match the rest of the ensemble - for example on or on the terrace. White or blue flowers, for example, which are combined with green foliage plants, look fresh and modern. However, not only the appearance is decisive for the choice of plants, because the first and most important criterion is still the location. Sun-loving flowers need a sunny spot, while some types do well in partial shade or even shade. However, limit yourself to a few species that are always repeated when planting beds.
Perfect for modern gardens: stone or gravel beds
Stone and gravel beds are very easy to care for and, once planted, look attractive for a long time. In between, it is best to plant drought-tolerant perennials and ornamental grasses such as bearded iris, noble rue (Artemisia), ornamental onion, yarrow and pearl grass, as well as Mediterranean plants such as lavender feel very comfortable here. Such a flower bed is perfectly combined when a narrow stream meanders through it - water is an important design element of modern gardens.
