A beautiful flower bed can also be created on the balcony. There are countless great ideas for this, whereby you can of course also limit yourself to the colorful planting of the balcony boxes - even here great effects can be achieved. With our tips you can conjure up an oasis of flowers on your balcony.

A balcony can also bloom colorfully like a garden

Plan, plant and care for balcony flowers correctly

The location and growth conditions differ greatly between garden areas and balconies, not least because flowers in plants always grow restricted and require regular, careful care. However, the microclimate on a sheltered balcony - especially if it is covered - is better suited for many exotic species, as it is warmer and less exposed to the outside influences of the weather.

Appropriate species

In principle, you can cultivate all the flowers on the balcony that you also plant in the garden - you only need the appropriate space if they are very large perennials. You cannot keep a delphinium up to two meters high or a hydrangea bush in a balcony box, such species need a large bucket. As a result, the choice of species depends primarily on the size of your balcony and the lighting conditions there. Other types of flowers feel better in sunny and warm locations (mainly on south-facing balconies) than in a more shady spot.

planters

When it comes to planters, there are no limits to your imagination: You can put together a tub garden from various DIY store planters or get creative and misuse other containers: the old zinc tub is just as suitable for planting colorful flowers as the bakery box or the discarded wicker basket. You should only make sure that excess water and rainwater can run off unhindered - waterlogging is fatal for most plants.

design and arrangement

You can also get creative with the arrangement:

  • Plant ladders can be set up and planted on the balcony walls.
  • You can also attach the planters directly to the wall.
  • Both standing and climbing or hanging plants thrive here.
  • It is best to plant hanging species in hanging baskets.
  • Arrange large and small pots on the floor, a ledge or the table.
  • Even a small raised bed fits on many balconies.

Balcony boxes (€109.00), on the other hand, should not be planted too densely: the rule of thumb is that there should always be a hand's width of space between individual plants.

tips

With balcony flowers, always ensure good drainage in the pot, and they must also be supplied with sufficient water and nutrients on a regular basis. Planters with water reservoir and long-term fertilizer help you with plant care.
