Hostas love shade

In the garden there are not only sunny sides

As always in life, there are of course not only sunny sides in the garden. Be it because the high hedge casts shadows or the neighbor's pear tree: shaded areas are no reason to do without a flower bed with flowering plants. Although the selection is significantly smaller than among the sun-loving plants, these are often rather uncomplicated species. However, before you drive to the garden center, first determine the soil in the planned shaded area. It can have very different properties. Typically, the soil here is rather moist and tends to have a low pH. In certain locations, however, the soil in a shade bed can be quite dry, which is why moisture-tolerant plants do not belong here.

The most beautiful perennials for the flower bed in the shade

The following species are predestined for the shady flower bed, as they thrive particularly well here.

hosts

Hostas, also hosta or heart leaf lilies, are typical ornamental leaf perennials. Depending on the species and variety, the plants have cream-white, yellow-green, dark green or steel-blue colored leaves, some are even multicolored. The flowering period is between June and July. Hostas need a humus-rich and evenly moist soil.

splendor pier

Astilbes or spiers do not bear their name without reason: They bloom magnificently even in the deepest shade. Their flower spikes have a wide range of colors and can be up to 55 centimeters long. Royal piers need a soil rich in nutrients and humus.

silver candles

The silver candle, also known as Christophskraut, enchants with its inflorescences, which are between 60 and 180 centimeters high, depending on the variety, with long, white flower clusters. Some of the different varieties bloom well into autumn and need humus-rich, well-drained soil.

Purplebells

The attractive purple bell (Heuchera) also belongs to the ornamental foliage perennials. In addition to the large leaves, the perennial enchants with its numerous, tiny bell-shaped flowers, which appear in long panicles between May and July.
