A bare house wall is not always a pretty sight. A bed can quickly remedy that. However, there are a few things to consider so that the plants grow well there and the wall stays nice and clean.

Does a distance between the house wall and the bed make sense?
A distance between the flower bed and the wall of the house is always useful if the growth of the plants is hindered by the house or if the wall would be soiled by the plants. This happens, for example, relatively often on the weather side at longer. Persistent or very heavy rain causes the earth to splash up and leave unsightly marks.
In most cases, gravel can remedy the situation fairly quickly. Even a narrow strip ensures a sufficiently large distance. Alternatively, you can cover the bed with bark mulch or gravel. Ground covers also keep the soil in check in the bed.
The bed on the south wall
You should only place plants that require a lot of light on the south wall of your house. The moisture content of the soil is also important. If it is dry, you can water thirsty plants, but you will hardly get dry soil that is too wet. Mediterranean herbs are also suitable for the south face, as most of them tolerate full sun quite well.
The bed on the north wall
Plants that love the shade belong on the north wall. Astilbes or hostas should feel quite comfortable here. Rarely, however, is the wall of the house aligned in such a way that it casts its shadow on the bed throughout the day. You can fill areas that have at least a few hours of sunshine with plants that are suitable for partial shade.
Tips for attractive house beds:
- Plants of the same height appear slightly monotonous
- more attractive: different high-growing plants
- set colored accents
- suitable plants: hollyhocks, roses, bluebells
- possibly create a distance between the bed and the wall (cleanliness)
- Observe the light and nutrient requirements of the plants
tips
If you want to avoid unsightly soil splashes on your house wall when it rains, then make sure there is a small distance between the bed and the wall or cover the bed.
