If Goji berries are planted in a garden, this is usually done less because of the quite charming-looking flowers and more with the aim of the most lush berry harvest possible. While the respective plant variety as well as the chosen location play an important role, the fertilization of these shrubs should be regarded as secondary.

In order for the goji berry to bear many fruits, it should be fertilized with compost once a year

Under suitable conditions, the goji berry is extremely frugal

In a sufficiently sunny and warm place with a permeable soil substrate, optimal growth conditions are available for the goji berries. After all, not so few garden owners ban this plant from their garden precisely because it can sometimes tend to proliferate even with little care. With the goji berry, the question of the nutrient supply is not so important, as it can easily survive on poor soil. But the roots should be protected from waterlogging with good drainage.

Compost is sufficient for the nutrient supply

To provide goji berries with the nutrients they need, it is quite sufficient if some compost is spread around the base of the bush once a year. If goji berries are replanted, the compost that has been deposited can also be worked directly into the planting hole. With relatively heavy soils, however, some coarse-grained sand should also be used to loosen up the soil structure. If goji berries really seem weak and do not flower, this is usually not due to insufficient fertilization, but rather to one of the following factors.

  • lack of winter hardiness of late planted young plants
  • susceptibility to powdery mildew
  • summer drought

Be careful when using plant fertilizer

In principle, special berry fertilizers (€3.94) from specialist shops can also be used for goji berries. In any case, you should make sure that the fertilizer used does not have a too high nitrogen content. Otherwise, with the goji berries, this would only stimulate excessive growth of the plant mass, which is usually associated with a lower harvest.

tips

With regard to the fertilization of the Goji berries with compost from your own garden, care should be taken for plant protection reasons not to deposit cuttings from shrubs affected by powdery mildew on your own compost heap, but rather to dispose of them elsewhere.
