The coral shrub, which comes from South America, is often grown in tubs or directly in the garden because of its bright red fruits. It belongs to the nightshade family and should therefore be treated with care. Unfortunately, it is one of the poisonous plants.

As delicious as the fruit looks, you should not eat it

The coral bush is poisonous

As beautiful as the coral shrub looks in the bucket or in the garden bed - if you have children or pets in the family, you should be careful when caring for them. Like all nightshade plants, the fruits contain alkaloids such as solanocapsin, which are toxic to humans and animals.

Symptoms of poisoning can occur even if only two berries are eaten

  • nausea
  • stomach pain
  • diarrhea
  • unconsciousness

Therefore, make sure to place pots with coral shrubs out of the reach of small children and pets, or better yet, do not care for them at all.

tips

The coral shrub is not hardy and is therefore grown in a bucket. It must be overwintered frost-free at temperatures no cooler than eight degrees.
