Planning a garden or bed is certainly a lot of work, but it can also be fun. Even if you want to start digging immediately after planning, you should first mark out the planned beds.

A bed should be clearly demarcated

Why should I mark out the beds precisely at all?

If you have precisely marked out the previously carefully planned new beds, then you can check your planning again on the spot. Does the layout of the garden really match your wishes and ideas? Are the plants getting enough light or shade where they are supposed to be, is the soil ideal? If everything is to your liking, you can start with the earthworks.

If you want to plant beds in your vegetable garden, you can first dig up the entire garden and then mark out the individual beds. Then create the necessary paths between the beds. These do not necessarily have to be fixed. It is often enough to trample the earth on the planned paths.

What do I need to stake out a bed?

If you want to mark a rectangular bed, you will need four wooden stakes or sticks to mark the corners, more if you have a polygonal or round bed. You will also need a tape measure and string. A spade or shovel and a wheelbarrow are sufficient to dig up the earth.

Mark out beds - step by step

Measure the desired bed and stick the wooden pegs or stable sticks into the ground at the corners. Connect the sticks with string, marking the edges of the bed. Now you can start digging or digging the earth.

If you want to create several new beds, then it makes sense to first stake out all beds and only then start with the earthwork. So you can rearrange again without any problems if you do not like the layout or design.

The essentials in brief:

  • measure bed
  • Mark corners with stakes or sticks
  • Tighten strings to mark the side edges of the bed
  • Dig up the bed or dig a new bed

tips

Beds are staked out not only when creating new beds, but also when designing the vegetable garden.
