If the planter is big enough, the goji berry can be grown in the bucket without any problems. However, some special features should be taken into account with this plant species in terms of location and care.

Small shrubs also do well in pots

Advantages of bucket culture for wolfberry

The goji berry, also known as "common wolfberry", was initially known as an "import berry" from Asian countries, but is now increasingly being cultivated in Germany. Under the right environmental conditions, goji berries can show rapid growth. This is why many hobby gardeners prefer growing in pots, as the plants remain a little more compact and their underground rhizomes cannot spread uncontrollably across the garden. It is also much easier to provide a permeable substrate in a bucket than in an outdoor bed with loamy soil. Last but not least, the sun-loving goji berries can simply be better placed in a bucket in the best possible position facing the sun.

Lay the foundation for a good harvest with planting

Even if freshly propagated Goji Berries appear rather small and innocent at first, with good care they can quickly stretch out long shoots of up to 80 cm in length or more in all directions. Accordingly, the planter for a wolfberry bush should be large enough. The best time for planting and transplanting is in spring, as there is still enough time for rooting before the winter frosts. As a potting substrate, you can mix two parts ordinary potting soil with one part perlite or sand. The pot should have drainage holes and not stand on a trivet. At the very least, due to the waterlogging intolerance of the goji berries, you should only water them every few days, even in summer, and not leave their roots in permanent moisture.

Care for the goji berries in the bucket optimally at any time of the year

In a sunny spot, the goji berry in the bucket usually develops splendidly if the following tips for care are followed:

  • Overwinter potted plants wrapped in bubble wrap and a layer of mulch outdoors
  • do not water too often (the wolfberry bush does not like waterlogging)
  • a courageous pruning should be carried out annually
  • Powdery mildew should be recognized and combated as early as possible

tips

With the goji berries, even a single bush can easily set flowers and fruits. However, the number of berries to be harvested is usually higher if several specimens of these berry bushes are placed in close proximity to each other.
