Goji berries became known to the general public in Central Europe with the trend of so-called "superfoods" and are usually available in the trade in dried form. There are definitely reasons for cultivating the vitamin-rich berries in a suitable location in your own garden.

Consume goji berries from your own harvest without hesitation

After the rise of the goji berry to become a "trendy berry", it didn't take long before imports from various countries around the world, preserved by drying, were available in shops. However, numerous tests have found residues of dangerous pesticides in these dried berries, so that the supposedly positive effect on health from eating them has been counteracted. When you grow your own goji berries in your own garden, you can be sure that you always have full control over the fertilizers used or plant health-boosting agents.

The enjoyment of fresh consumption and own processing

Since large-scale cultivation in Germany lags behind imports from other countries, the bright orange-red berries are usually only available in dried form or as juice. If they are harvested sufficiently ripe, goji berries also taste delicious and reasonably sweet fresh from the bush. However, when the harvest is slightly larger in late summer, the fruit can also be juiced or dried to serve as a flavoring ingredient in the following dishes:

  • breads
  • salads
  • cereals
  • soups

Goji berries are usually uncomplicated and grow quickly

If they are not freshly grown young plants, goji berries are quite hardy even at temperatures of down to - 25 degrees Celsius. The shrubs can therefore overwinter outdoors without any problems and tend to grow relatively quickly and vigorously under suitable conditions. As part of the care, it doesn't hurt to pluck goji berries boldly every year.

tips

Older shrubs can not only let their long branches strike new roots above ground like sinkers on the ground, sometimes underground runners also form. It may therefore be advisable to use a rhizome barrier in the soil to protect the rest of the garden from the goji berries spreading too much.
