They are called cocktail tomatoes, mini tomatoes or cherry tomatoes and thrive on the balcony. A sunny, warm location is not enough for a rich harvest. Only a balanced care program gives balcony gardeners refreshing tomato enjoyment. Here you can find out how to properly water, fertilize and use up your balcony tomatoes.

Tomatoes on the balcony need a lot of water

Pour balcony tomatoes properly - how does it work?

A prudent water supply is one of the mainstays in the care of balcony tomatoes. You should pay attention to this:

  • Use lukewarm and lime-free water
  • Keep the substrate constantly moist
  • Alternately moist tomato soil causes the fruit to burst

For the prevention of tomato diseases, leaves, shoots and fruits should be kept dry. Please do not sprinkle balcony tomatoes with the water hose.

When and how to fertilize tomatoes on the balcony?

Liquid tomato fertilizer guarantees the ideal nutrient supply for tomatoes in balcony boxes and tubs. Until the first fruit appears, only fertilize at intervals of 2 to 3 weeks. If growth is promoted too intensively before fruit set, the crop yield will fall far short of expectations. Apply the fertilizer weekly only after the formation of recognizable fruit buds.

Cutting out balcony tomatoes - when does it make sense?

Balcony tomatoes are very popular with beginners because with these varieties, stinging is not part of the care. If you would like to harvest larger fruits, there is nothing wrong with using the traditional method. The aim of the measure is to remove superfluous shoots so that available energy can be invested in fewer and larger tomatoes. It's that easy:

  • Stingy shoots sit in the axil between the main shoot and the petiole
  • Remove with a height of 2 to 4 cm
  • Grasp stinginess between thumb and forefinger and snap off
  • Gently break off stronger shoots to the side

You should not tear off stingy shoots on balcony tomatoes. If such an axillary drive only catches your eye when it is more than 5 cm long, it is not fully exploited. In this particular case, you only cut off the shoot tip so that no flowers can form.

The large hanging basket (€11.99) on the south-facing balcony is now reserved for hanging tomato varieties. Tempting varieties, such as Gold Nugget or Tumblin Tom Red, feature casually elegant tendrils covered with golden yellow or red mini tomatoes.
