Balcony gardeners can only enjoy untroubled holiday joy when there is no lack of water for the summer plants in the box, pot and hanging basket. Instead of asking the neighbors or plundering the holiday budget for a high-priced irrigation system, you should delve into this guide. How to water your balcony plants automatically.

Automatic watering from paper towels and buckets - this is how it works
Saving foxes among the balcony gardeners ignore sophisticated irrigation technology and simply build the automatic system themselves. The list of materials only contains 3 items: kitchen paper, bucket and water. How to proceed correctly with the installation:
- Unroll 6 sheets of kitchen paper
- Place on the tabletop, fold and shape into a roll
- Press the paper roll onto the substrate of the box, bucket or traffic light
- Leave a third of the roll hanging out of the planter as the end piece
Place the bucket next to the balcony plant to be watered and fill it with water. Hang the loose end of the roll deep into the water - and the automatic watering system (€32.95) is ready for your vacation.
This is how balcony plants water themselves - a tried and tested life hack
From a PET bottle and a porous clay cone with a screw thread, you can conjure up a self-service system for thirsty balcony plants in no time at all. Suitable clay or ceramic cones are readily available at any garden center or hardware store. Thats how it works:
- Rinse out the used 1.5 liter PET bottle
- fill with water
- Replace the previous closure with the clay cone
- Put the bottle upside down in the substrate
- If necessary, support the water bottle with a wooden stick
- Poke a hole in the bottom of the bottle with a sewing needle
If this solution is too unstable, use a proven alternative. The clay cones have thin hoses that serve as a connection to a water container that stands next to the planter. When the substrate dries, the capillary forces become active, sucking in the water through the clay cone and hose. The larger the flower box (€16.99) or bucket, the more cones are put into the ground.
tips
We recommend soft water for filling the automatic watering system. Most balcony plants for boxes and tubs have an aversion to lime. Flowers, perennials and shrubs, on the other hand, like well stale tap water or filtered rainwater.
