The liver balm (bot. Ageratum) is a real eye-catcher on the balcony, the terrace or in the garden bed with its lush flowers. But not every plant fits equally well in every place, not every liver balm.

The liver balm is pretty and poisonous

Of course it's good that there are very different types of liver balm, some are rather short, others are up to 60 centimeters high. The flower color also varies from white to pink and violet to various shades of blue. What they all have in common is that they prefer a sunny location and fresh soil. The liver balm is not hardy, but generally perennial.

Where do I plant small liver balm (Ageratum houstonianum)?

The liver balm can also feel good in a rock garden or on your balcony. He's quite versatile in that regard. For such places, especially the low permanent varieties are suitable. You also have a large selection of different colors here.

However, only plant your liver balm in the rock garden after the ice saints in May, otherwise it could be damaged by late frost. On warm days he can definitely spend the day on the balcony.

Low Staying Varieties of Liver Balm:

  • Blue Danube: medium blue flower
  • Pacific: purple flower
  • Royal Hawaii: dark blue flower
  • White Hawaii: white flower

Where is the best place to plant large varieties?

The higher-growing varieties of liver balm can be perfectly accommodated in your perennial border. Note the different growth heights. The "Schnittwunder" variety grows up to 70 centimeters tall, and "Old Grey" still around 50 centimeters. The higher the plants are, the further back you should stand in the perennial bed so that they do not cover other plants.

Tall Growing Varieties of Liver Balm:

  • Red Flint: red-violet flowers
  • Old Grey: grey-blue flowers
  • Cutting miracle: pale blue flowers

Caution poisonous!

When choosing your plants, it is important to remember that liver balm is poisonous in all parts of the plant. If you still want to plant it in your family garden, then please do so in such a way that the plant is out of the reach of children and animals.
