Not all principles of permaculture can be applied on the balcony, but you can certainly implement some elements of a permaculture garden for a higher yield and a more harmonious cultivation on the balcony or terrace. You can find out what these are below.

The principles of permaculture for the balcony
As I said, not all permaculture ideas can be transferred to the balcony, but there are some that are almost made for the balcony garden.
Maximum yield in minimum space
The principle of space-saving cultivation is one of the core ideas of permaculture - and more than suitable for cultivation on the balcony.
Don't throw anything away
The aim of permaculture is to use everything that is available and not to produce waste. This can also be practiced on the balcony garden: create a small, closed compost heap or a worm farm in which you dispose of leaves and dried things as well as kitchen waste. In this way, you not only dispose of your rubbish, but also produce valuable compost.
promote biodiversity
Grow as many plants as possible on your balcony that will flower to provide nectar for bees, bumblebees and other insects. Herbs are also suitable for this if you simply let them bloom.
Cultivation methods in the spirit of permaculture for the balcony
If you cleverly combine several of the elements mentioned below, you can achieve a high harvest even on a small balcony. But pay attention to the statics of your balcony! It's better to consult an expert before you create a mini pond, potato tower and raised bed in an area of six square meters.
potato tower
With the help of a potato tower, you can harvest potatoes by the kilo and require little more than one square meter of space. Find out how to build your own potato tower
in this guide.
raised bed
A raised bed also fits on larger balconies and not only enables back-friendly harvesting but also earlier harvesting. Since the cultivation on the slightly warm raised bed can take place earlier, it can also be harvested earlier. Learn more about raised beds in permaculture here.
Vertical Gardens
Vertical gardens are also ideal for small balconies. The cultivation of fruit and vegetables or herbs takes place here, e.g. in plant bags or in self-built pallet gardens. You can find out how to plant your pallets in these instructions.
mini pond
Water is a central element in the permaculture garden. A pond provides a habitat for insects and other animals. A mini pond also serves this purpose. More on that in this article.
