Fruit trees are mostly propagated by grafting, since this method allows for the fastest fruit-bearing trees. In addition, certain characteristics, such as vigor, can best be transferred to a certain variety in this way. The different finishing methods are carried out at different times of the year.

Fruit trees are often grafted in summer

The timing depends on the method chosen

Budding, for example, a very common finishing method for many types of fruit, takes place in summer. There are two different times at which you can successfully transplant the desired fruit variety: You have the highest growth rates between May and June and then again between July and August, whereby the later date is the better - plants that are transplanted early will still sprout in the same year off, but then freeze back again. The so-called scion grafting, in which the rootstock and scion are connected by copulation, is only possible during dormancy.

tips

Fruit trees propagated from seed are often wildlings, which can exhibit very different traits from their parent plants. For example, seedlings of plum-like species often have thorns.
