In order to protect a terrace from the prying eyes of the neighbors, privacy hedges can be planted or raised beds can be cleverly placed next to the terrace. In some cases, however, there are also many good arguments for building a wall as a privacy screen for the cozy garden terrace.

A stone wall protects from looks and casts shadows

The stone wall as privacy, sun and wind protection

The erection of a stone wall is generally associated with more effort than the erection of screens made of boards or pallets and the planting of living screen variants, but a stone wall offers a service life of usually several decades even with relatively little maintenance. In addition, a closed wall protects better than other types of privacy screen from lateral gusts of wind, so that the terrace invites you to relax outdoors even in spring and autumn even when there is little sunlight. Depending on the orientation of a terrace and the correspondingly high privacy wall, the wall can also partially serve as sun protection.

Thorough planning of a wall creates long-term stability and security

Before erecting a wall, you should consider the following topics during planning so that there is no rude awakening after the start of construction:

  • any approval requirements and distance regulations
  • the planned height of the protective wall
  • construction and material
  • the nature of the subsoil

The weight of a stone wall should never be underestimated, the nature of the materials requires careful planning before erecting a privacy wall. While the widespread stone baskets can ensure good stability even with a relatively high wall height, natural stone walls are subject to a fundamental limitation in the possible total height of the wall. In any case, you should inspect the stability of the subsoil on site and, if necessary, take precautions to prevent serious accidents during or after the construction of the wall.

Different variants of walls as patio privacy screens

There are very different ways to protect a terrace with a stone wall from the view from outside or next door. Most designs of privacy walls are typically constructed from the following materials:

  • Gabions (stone baskets with a filling of usually regional rock)
  • natural stone walls
  • brick or concrete walls
  • Walls made from demolition material/historical bricks

tips

After completion of the construction work, a closed stone wall frontage can have a more restrictive effect than originally thought. This can be remedied by mirrors attached along the wall, which are provided with a window frame that looks deceptively real. A certain openness to the outside world is suggested to residents and guests on the terrace, although an absolutely opaque stone wall protects the terrace from prying eyes.
