Cuttings and seeds that need to sprout reliably have different needs than mature plants. High-quality seed soil offers the small plants the ideal conditions to quickly grow into strong young plants. Sowing soil is a synonym for potting soil and is therefore not different from it at all.

Sowing soil is ideal for young plants

What is the difference between potting soil and potting soil?

  • Potting soil is characterized by its high mineral nutrient density. It contains a lot of nitrogen and salts necessary for growth. For the delicate young plants, however, this offer is too lush and rather harmful.
  • Sowing soil is low in nutrients and also very loose and permeable. This allows water to drain well, which prevents rot and mold growth. It is salt-free or at least low in salt and germ-free. This is important as the seedlings and cuttings are often hooded. Due to the lack of wind circulation, spores and diseases spread very quickly in the resulting greenhouse climate. The seed that has just sprouted is immediately infected and dies.

tips

In addition to organic potting soil, substrates based on additives such as perlite or vermiculite are becoming increasingly important. They are very suitable for plants from drier areas, as the water drains off excellently with these potting soils and a lot of oxygen gets to the newly forming roots.
