Despite the fact that the gravel bed proves to be extremely easy to care for during the gardening season, fallen leaves often collect on the surface in autumn. The wet weather conditions of the cold season often leave the stones mossy, which looks extremely unsightly. So even the gravel bed cannot be completely without care, even if cleaning is quite easy.

The gravel bed looks particularly beautiful when it is clean

When is cleaning?

The best time for this is spring, before the plants sprout again. Leaves should be removed with the leaf vacuum in autumn.

Step 1: Cut back plants

During the winter months, the grasses covered with hoarfrost and snow presented a fragile, glittering sight. In spring, however, many stalks turn brown and soil the bed. Therefore, as a first measure, cut back the plants, unless you have already done so in autumn.

This is a good opportunity to divide and thus propagate lush perennials. Some plants are getting old and should be replaced by fresh green? Then do this work now, too.

method

  • Push aside gravel around the plants.
  • Carefully lift and fold over the weed protection fleece.
  • Perennial either dig up, divide and replant or
  • trim the edges evenly.
  • Fill the resulting hole with soil.
  • Carefully spread out the weed fleece (€21.70).
  • Finally cover the area around the plant with gravel again.

Remove leaves and plant parts

You don't have to laboriously pick up leaves and dirt by hand. The good old leaf rake does an excellent job here. You will be amazed at how much dead plant material is revealed this way.

Remove green growth

Then smooth the gravel surface with a rake. You don't have to replace moss-covered or dirty stones. You can simply spray them with a commercially available green growth remover. The means are environmentally friendly, the planting is not damaged. At the same time, the active ingredients prevent the formation of new moss deposits in the long term.

tips

Ornamental grasses in the gravel bed are often difficult to cut back. Tie these together with a wide ribbon and cut off the plants above with hedge trimmers (€77.00). Then loosen the cord again. The perennial now has a slightly semicircular tuft that is visually very appealing.
