Although sweet chestnuts and horse chestnuts belong to different plant families, they prefer quite similar locations. Both like it sunny. The sweet chestnut also prefers it warm, permanently above 10 °C. But it also tolerates light frost.

How much space does a chestnut need?
Depending on the species, horse chestnuts grow between a good ten (red horse chestnut) and up to 30 meters (common horse chestnut). The sweet chestnut reaches an average of about 20 to 25 meters. The crown has similar dimensions. Since a chestnut does not like to be transplanted, you should give it enough space from the start, with a diameter of about the height of the tree.
The essentials in brief:
- bright and sunny
- for the sweet chestnut like warm, mild climate
- Pitch diameter = height of mature tree
tips
Calculate about as much space in diameter for the chestnut as the mature tree will be tall.
