The leisurely growth of Asian maple species does not imply that the shrubs will stay in the same pot forever. While maple trees in the bed don't like being transplanted, repotting for maple in the bucket is a must in the garden. You can find out here when and how to properly repot the ornamental tree.

The maple needs fresh soil every two to three years

When is the right time?

Experience has shown that the substrate in the bucket is exhausted after 2 to 3 years, so you should repot your maple in fresh soil. If root strands are already growing out of the ground opening, the measure is scheduled earlier. The best time is at the end of the winter dormancy, just before the leaves sprout in spring.

Preparatory work - this is how you pot maple properly

Changing to a new bucket is easier when the substrate has dried. Careful root ball and pot preparation will encourage growth. That is how it goes:

  • Run a sharp knife between the edge of the pot and the root ball
  • Spread out an old blanket to lay the bucket on its side
  • Grasp the maple by the root collar and pull out of the container

Remove any remnants of the old soil by shaking or spraying the root ball. While the roots drain, clean the pot if it can be used again.

Skillfully stew - you should pay attention to that

If the previous pot was tight, please use a larger bucket. The rule of thumb for the correct diameter is that there should be two finger widths of space between the root ball and the edge of the container. How to proceed:

  • First create a drainage of potsherds or gravel over the water drain in the bottom of the pot
  • Cover the drainage with a thin fleece that is permeable to water and air
  • Fill in a few handfuls of fresh substrate
  • Grasp the maple by the root neck, insert in the middle and fill in fresh soil
  • Press the substrate repeatedly to avoid voids

Please make sure that the previous planting depth remains unchanged. It simplifies later watering if you fill in the soil up to 2 cm below the edge of the pot. So nothing can spill over. Finally, water your repotted maple generously.

tips

Repotting is not necessarily associated with a pruning. No root mass is lost during this process, as is the case when transplanting in the bed. It is therefore up to your gardening decision to shorten shoots that are too long after changing the pot.
