When the lilac blooms, spring has really arrived - a short time later all the other plants sprout too, the world becomes green and colorful with all the flowers. With cut lilac blossoms you bring spring into your home, including the characteristically sweet lilac scent. Read this article to find out how you can keep them longer in the vase.

Prune lilac flowers early in the morning
To keep the bouquet of lilacs fresh for as long as possible, you should cut the flowering shoots as early as possible in the morning. Flower stalks are best
- whose flower buds are not yet fully open
- and which are only slightly leafy.
Do not simply snap off the shoots, but cut them directly at the base of the stem with a sharp knife or scissors. The cutting edge should be slightly slanted, this will make it easier for the shoot to absorb water later.
This way, lilacs will last longer in the vase
It is sometimes advised to pat the stem ends flat, as this will prolong the life of the lilac flowers. Unfortunately, exactly the opposite is the case, because this measure damages the pathways and thus makes it difficult to absorb water. The shoots dry up faster. Instead, these remedies help to ensure longer flowering in the vase:
- Cut the stem ends several inches deep.
- How to enlarge the recording area.
- Then briefly dip the ends in hot water.
- Now place them in lukewarm water.
- The vase is best placed in a light but not directly sunny location.
- It should also not be too warm, otherwise the lilacs will fade faster.
- Change the water daily.
- Do not add sugar or similar as food - this is just a breeding ground for fungus.
Lilac flowers are not edible
Even if you read this “tip” again and again on various websites about medicinal herbs etc.: Lilac blossoms and other parts of the plant are not suitable for consumption or for preparing teas and the like. They taste very bitter and are considered slightly poisonous. Instead, however, you can use the flowers and fruits of the black elderberry, which is also referred to as "lilac" in some regions.
