The 'lilac of the south' is not related to the common lilac (Syringa), only the long flower spikes of the lagerstromia or crape myrtle resemble it. The willow plant, which originates from the subtropics and tropics, is not hardy here and can therefore only be cultivated in tubs. In the article below you can find out what else you should consider when caring for this beautiful flowering shrub.

Southern lilac likes it warm and sunny

Which location does the southern lilac prefer?

The lagerstromie needs plenty of direct sun and heat - the more the better. It is best to place the bucket in a wind-protected, sunny and warm location directly in front of a light-colored house wall. If the weather cooperates, the plant shows its magnificent flowers between July and October. On the other hand, if the summer is rainy and/or rather cold, it will not flower until the end of the summer.

Water and fertilize southern lilacs properly

Keep the southern lilac evenly moist, as it sheds its flower buds if the substrate is too dry. Water regularly between sprouting and wintering, but only very little during the winter break. Also make sure that there is no waterlogging - good drainage in the pot is essential. Also between April and September fertilize the Lagerstromie with a liquid fertilizer for flowering plants, which you add to the irrigation water.

Pruning Southern Lilacs

The Lagerstromia only forms its magnificent flowers on the new shoots, which is why you should cut back the shrub vigorously every year after the leaves have fallen.

How to propagate southern lilac

You can easily multiply the lilacs of the south with cuttings you cut yourself, which you put in a mixture of potting soil and sand in spring or summer. Propagation via seeds is also possible, but these must be very fresh.

diseases and pests

Unfortunately, the Lagerstromie is very sensitive to powdery mildew fungi, especially in humid summers. Therefore, always ensure a dry location and do not water the plant over the leaves. Aphids are also quite common, but can be easily combated.

How to properly winter lilacs of the south

The container plant tolerates a few minus degrees and therefore does not necessarily have to be put away in the winter quarters before the first frost. This in turn can be dark, as the lagerstromie sheds its leaves. Put them outside again in May, after the late frosts. Before that, however, you should drive them to a bright and warm location from April.

tips

The southern lilac should be repotted into fresh substrate about every two to three years. The shrub feels most comfortable in loamy potting soil mixed with expanded clay (19.73€).
