Have you ever thought about a practical storage cellar under the garden shed, in which you can store the crops of the immediate suburb? The climatic conditions in a small cellar under the garden house would be ideal for this. Even if this project involves some effort, it can make sense to build a basement under the garden house.

Adding a basement to a summer house is expensive

Is a building permit required?

A basement may make this necessary. You should therefore inquire with the responsible municipality about the applicable regulations.

Basement before building the garden house

This variant is associated with the least effort, because you can plan the basement before laying the foundation. To do this, proceed as follows:

  • Dig a sufficiently deep pit.
  • This is filled with a layer of gravel and sand.
  • Paving slabs are then laid on top of these.
  • You can build the side walls yourself from sand-lime brick. These have the advantage that they optimally regulate the room climate for storage.
  • At the top, the basement is sealed off by a stable, insulated wooden floor with an integrated hatch.

Subsequent basement

If you later want to add a basement to an already standing house, this is much more difficult and expensive. In addition, the concrete floor slab is often not designed as a load ceiling, so that the static calculations required for the necessary building permit do not meet the requirements.

It is therefore usually cheaper and less complicated to set up a new garden house (€24.90) with a basement built before it is built.

tips

A ground rent is a good alternative to the basement and is much easier to implement. All you have to do is dig a pit about forty centimeters deep, into which a thin drainage layer of dry sand is poured. The edges are supported with formwork boards or bricks. Finally, the rent is covered with a wooden board. A small storage room is ready, as our grandparents already knew how to appreciate.
