Even on the smallest balcony you can still create a paradise for flowers, fruit and vegetables - which you can then happily harvest and snack on directly from the bush. With our six tips you can create even more space for the most delicious treats.

With a little skill, even tomatoes can be grown on the balcony

Creating and designing a balcony garden

A balcony offers very limited space, so you have to be creative when laying out and designing your garden - and also make a wise choice when it comes to the fruit and vegetables to be planted. Basically, the rule applies: Choose varieties that grow as compactly as possible, which do not take up too much space and are still very productive. In addition, some vegetables only provide a negligible yield in a limited space - and should therefore give way to other types. The best example is the potato, which some people grow on the balcony. But also lush growing varieties such as physalis / Andean berries and zucchini take up a lot of space or root vegetables such as carrots and parsnips only provide low yields.

Vertical Gardening

Most balconies only have a small footprint and thus do not offer much floor space. However, you can also use the walls to attach planters - and grow herbs there, for example.

Hanging tomatoes in hanging baskets

Just like the walls, the ceiling must not go unused: delicious hanging tomatoes and hanging strawberries thrive in hanging baskets.

Pillar fruit for carefree fruit enjoyment

Anyone who likes to eat apples, pears, cherries or plums can fall back on a slender columnar fruit tree. But be careful: some resourceful suppliers grow normal types of fruit in the form of columns and then call this "pillar fruit" - the awakening will then be bad, as these types naturally grow strongly. It is better to use actual columnar fruit varieties, whose growth has been selected in this special way for centuries.

Mini raised bed for easy gardening

If you have back problems, you can garden comfortably in a mini raised bed or table bed, which can be easily positioned on the balcony and leaves plenty of space for fresh vegetables.

Crates and boxes instead of traditional planters

It's also great for gardening in stacked bakery and fruit crates, especially since you ensure the necessary water drainage in this way. Stack two boxes on top of each other, but only the top one will be planted. The lower one, on the other hand, serves as a catch basin for excess irrigation water.

Herbs from the euro pallet

Vertical gardening is easy with the help of a Euro pallet: simply place the pallet in the vertical position and use the planks to build flower boxes from the tabs. (€16.99) These can be wonderfully planted with flowers and herbs.

tips

Lettuce lovers should prefer cut and pick lettuce, because these will always grow back and can be harvested continuously.
