A spring basket brings blooms into the house before the springtime begins. But which spring flowers are suitable for planting? Below you will find instructions, tips and tricks on how to plant a spring basket yourself.

Daffodils are particularly popular in the spring basket

The basket does it

The best way to plant your spring basket depends primarily on the material of your basket: wood or willow must be protected from moisture, plastic or metal baskets can do without protection. Large-meshed metal baskets in particular look particularly beautiful when they are covered with moss, so that a naturally green basket is created, so to speak. However, you should have this basket outside where the water can drain off or put a large plate under it.

What do you need for your spring basket?

Every hobby gardener has the tools and materials you need for planting a spring basket at home:

  • A basket
  • gravel or pieces of clay
  • Some earth
  • A small shovel
  • A plastic bag, garbage bag, or cling film if the basket is made of wood or wicker
  • plant
  • moss

Which plants go in the spring basket?

When choosing plants, you should consider whether you want a dominant color or whether the basket should be as colorful as possible. Beautiful spring bloomers are:

  • daffodils
  • tulips
  • hyacinths
  • grape hyacinths
  • primroses
  • pansies

Plant the spring basket step by step

1. Lay out the basket

If you want to use a basket made of wicker or wood, you should first line it with a waterproof film, e.g. a sturdy plastic bag or garbage bag. Let the plastic hang over the edge a little; they can cover you later.

2. Drainage

If you tend to water your plants too much, poke a few holes in the plastic sheeting at the bottom to allow excess water to drain. Don't forget to put your spring basket on a plate or coaster! Then put some gravel or broken clay in the plant basket as the bottom layer. (€11.99)

3. Planting

Now put some soil in the plant basket and then place your plants or tubers as desired. You don't need to consider space spacing, plant densely. However, keep in mind that larger plants should grow more in the middle and smaller ones on the edges.

4. Finish spring basket

Fill in the gaps with soil and cover free spaces and visible parts of the foil with pieces of moss. Decorate your spring basket as you wish with clay figures or the like.
